Planning a Kitchen Island: Size, Seating and Storage
Provincial Cabinets · October 23, 2026
How to plan a kitchen island that fits — walkway space, seating, storage ideas and whether an island or peninsula suits your kitchen.
Start with the space around it
An island needs room to walk and work around it. Designers commonly plan around 42 inches of clearance on working sides, and more if two people often cook at once.
If your kitchen is narrow, a peninsula — a counter attached to one wall or cabinet run — can give you similar benefits with less floor space.
Seating
A common guideline is to allow about 24 inches of counter width per stool, with an overhang deep enough for knees. Decide early how many people you want to seat, as it shapes the island's length.
Storage ideas
Islands are great for deep drawers for pots and pans, a pull-out bin, or open shelving at the end. Facing drawers toward the cooking area keeps everyday items close.
Sink, cooktop or clear counter?
Putting the sink or cooktop in the island changes plumbing, electrical and ventilation needs. A clear island top gives the most flexible workspace and a social spot for family and guests.
See it before you build it
The best way to judge an island's size is to see it in your own room. A free 3D design lets you try different sizes and layouts before committing.
